Assistant Director, Youth Opportunity Hub
The Door, a partner organization to University Settlement, helps nearly 10,000 young people each year by empowering them to reach their potential by providing comprehensive youth development services in a diverse and caring environment. A major initiative within The Door, Broome Street Academy is a unique charter high school that prepares New York City’s most vulnerable youth for a successful future through rigorous academics paired with supports of The Door.
Youth Opportunity Hub: The Door was recently selected to be one of five “Youth Opportunity Hubs,” a first-of-its-kind effort to knit together community-based providers funded through the Manhattan District Attorney Office’s Criminal Justice Investment Initiative. Through a three-pronged strategy: The Door will outreach to 1,500 youth from the Lower East Side, Harlem, and Washington Heights, connect them to a full range of wraparound services at the hub, and provide more intensive services for high risk youth. The Door will collaborate with eleven outstanding partners (Arms Acres, Avenues for Justice, Carnegie Hall, CASES, Fresh Youth Initiatives, The New York Foundling, Per Scholas, Project Renewal, Sheltering Arms, The Whitney, and our sister organization University Settlement).
Short-term, we will see increased youth referrals to The Door, deeper partnerships, more involvement with services, and more intensive engagement to work toward education, career, mental health, and positive socialization goals. Mid-term, we will note outcomes such as: reduced initial justice system involvement, idle time, and risky behaviors; increased pro social engagements; improved mental and physical health; involvement in work and education opportunities; and connection to peers, adults, and mentors. Over the course of the grant period, we expect to achieve long-term outcomes such as retention in education and career opportunities, improved wellbeing, avoidance of system involvement, and continued pro social activities.
The Assistant Director will be an important project and relationship manager taking a leadership role in the rollout of The Door’s new Youth Opportunity Hub. As part of his/her work, he/she will also collaborate with staff at The Door, the Bronx Youth Center, and Broome Street Academy to develop stronger and more strategic relationships with foster care agencies in New York City.
