Senior Associate, Communications and Special Projects
Lantern Community Services provides innovative social services to over 1,500 people living in our 14 supportive housing residences across New York City. Twenty years ago, we pioneered supportive housing for people living with HIV/AIDS, and we continue lead our field as one of the City’s largest providers for youth aging out of foster care. Our many programs address our clients’ diverse needs – health, employment, education, nutrition, fitness, and the arts – and champion the independence and well-being of New Yorkers who are impacted by homelessness.
The Senior Associate, Communications and Special Projects will lead Lantern’s communications efforts, increasing awareness of the organization and its evidence-based programming approach to supportive housing in New York City. They will ensure consistent and effective messaging across Lantern’s various internal and external audiences; manage relationships with academic experts, community partners and other stakeholders; and coordinate delivery of cross-building programs. They will work closely with the organization’s Senior Leadership Team, and provide direct administrative support to the Interim Executive Director. The Senior Associate will supervise two staff, the Housing Specialist and the AmeriCorp Volunteer Coordinator, and will report to the Interim Executive Director. This position is exempt.
This is a varied and challenging role that requires a motivated, responsive, and detail-oriented communicator, with a flair for relationship-building and a strong commitment to addressing homelessness in New York City.
Responsibilities of the Senior Associate, Communications and Special Projects include, but are not limited to:
External communications and advocacy
- Prepare external communications materials, working with a graphic designer/consultant as needed, including emails to supporters, presentations to external agencies, press releases, blog posts, and impact graphics.
- Manage Lantern’s online presence, including maintaining the website and managing all social media accounts.
- Maintain relationships with local political representatives, including soliciting funding and fostering positive local community relations.
- Write small grant applications for private foundations, and manage relationships with foundation and other grant funders, including preparing grant reports.
- Represent Lantern in NYC advocacy forums and coordinate its participation in cross-sector and other policy influencing opportunities.
- Ensure Lantern staff’s adherence to the organization’s brand and style guide.
- Coordinate logistics of staff trainings and evidence-based model fidelity monitoring, including liaising with outside trainers and academic experts, reviewing curricula, handling administrative logistics, and following up to ensure utilization of material in day-to-day work.
Internal communications and program support
- Provide administrative support to the Interim Executive Director, including drafting emails, calendar scheduling, and meeting and conference call coordination.
- Provide support to the Interim Executive Director for all Board communications, including preparing quarterly organizational reports. Provide administrative support to the Lantern Board of Directors and their Committees, including coordinating meetings, minute-taking, and maintaining corporate documents.
- Assist the Interim Executive Director in planning their communications with Lantern staff, including drafting email updates and drafting bullet points for speeches.
- Supervise the Housing Specialist to deliver Lantern’s Moving On program, transitioning clients from supportive to independent housing.
- Supervise the AmeriCorp Member to implement Lantern’s volunteering strategy, including recruiting, managing and retaining volunteers. Prepare fiscal and program reports in line with AmeriCorp requirements.
- Coordinate delivery of other cross-building programs, as required.
- Participate in regular staff meetings, individual supervision and other meetings as required.
- Perform other job-related functions, as assigned.
- Bachelor’s Degree in communications, English, journalism, social sciences or related field.
- At least three years of experience in communications, advocacy or program coordination, preferably in the nonprofit sector.
- Excellent writing and proof-reading skills, with proven experience of writing effectively for different audiences and purposes.
- Track record of building and maintaining productive relationships with internal and external stakeholders.
- Proven ability to work independently and take initiative to accomplish tasks and solve problems.
- Outstanding organizational skills, with excellent attention to detail and the ability to prioritize deadlines and commitments appropriately.
- Demonstrated ability to work as a collaborative team member with a diverse population.

Experience with populations impacted by homelessness, the child welfare system, and/or the implementation of evidence-based social service models is a plus.
