As part of a Youth Skills Team, the Youth Skills Coach will be assigned a caseload of 14-21 year old youth in foster care. Program goals include ensuring youth leave foster care prepared to achieve the following seven long-term goals:

  1. Advocate for themselves;
  2. Care for their physical and mental well-being;
  3. Form healthy relationships;
  4. Pursue post-secondary education and/or vocational training;
  5. Secure sustainable employment;
  6. Manage personal finances; and
  7. Maintain a home.

In order to achieve the stated goals, the Youth Skills Coach will forge strong relationships with youth; assess youths’ needs and target SCO services accordingly; and empower youth with interpersonal, vocational, and independent living skills.

Education/Degree: High School Diploma or GED equivalent.
Other skills and requirements:

  • Extensive experience working with youth (preferably youth in foster care).
  • Excellent communication skills, a strong sense of empathy towards our populations served, and a passion for the field of child welfare.
  • Ability to respond to the unique developmental needs of youth in different stages of maturation.
  • Ability to work with youth and families that have histories of chemical dependency, mental illness, neglect, physical, sexual, and/or emotional abuse, different cultural backgrounds, and varying socioeconomics statuses.
  • Ability to work competently, compassionately, and without judgment with youth who may identify as lesbian, gay, bisexual or transgender, or who may be in different stages of discovering or disclosing their sexual orientation or gender identity.
  • Strong time management skills, diligence, resilience, and experience working in a unit or team.
  • Commitment to the mission and programs of SCO Family of Services.
  • Casework support with visits and other needs.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Word and Excel (Experience with CONNECTIONS preferred).
  • Valid NYS Driver’s License preferred.
