Bail Associate

The Liberty Fund is new citywide charitable bail fund dedicated to reducing the number of New Yorkers subjected to pretrial detention at Rikers Island simply because they are unable to post bail. The organization is ready to begin operations this spring and is seeking bail associates to work on the front lines of bail reform in New York City. These bail associates will operate out of criminal courts in the five boroughs and nearby offices to identify defendants who are eligible for these services and post bail on their behalf. They will then be responsible for connecting clients with appropriate social services and monitoring each case as it proceeds through the criminal justice system. Other duties will include reporting client outcomes; grant writing; advocacy and other duties related to the fund’s day-to-day operations and larger criminal justice reform efforts.


  • Prepare for and complete the state exam to become a licensed bail bonds agent with assistance from bail fund leadership.
  • Review case files of potential clients and conduct intake interviews to determine eligibility for services based on criteria set forth under the state bail regulations and guidelines created by the Mayor’s Office of Criminal Justice.
  • Communicate with clients and their attorney and caseworkers to help ensure that defendants appear in court and receive appropriate support services.
  • Collaborate with agents and attorneys from Legal Aid, Criminal Justice Agency and other organizations to effectively serve clients in court.
  • Post bail for qualified individuals and provide case management until final disposition.
  • Track client progress through the criminal justice system and report on outcomes.
  • Contribute to larger criminal justice advocacy and community outreach efforts.
  • Assist with office duties as needed.


  • Bachelor’s Degree or higher preferred
  • Excellent communication skills and the ability to work in a stressful, fast-paced environment
  • Solid judgment and ability to make difficult decisions
  • Strong attention to detail
  • Ability to work some nights and weekends as needed
  • A clear commitment to criminal justice reform and social justice
  • Prior experience in social services or criminal justice preferred
  • Bilingual a plus
